CHAPTER 14

The Anthill Mob

We spend another two days at Phu Bai with no better luck. Saigon finally decides to Arc Light the target boxes, and see what they come up with. Since that will require only two Bomb Damage Assessment teams as a follow up, we are sent back, leaving two teams there and one that trades places with us. We have an amazing four days stand down coming, which we might be able to stretch into six if we get in a couple of days training.

Back in Da Nang we enjoy a new brand of insanity. Everyone has been stricken with “prisoner” fever. It has infected the entire command structure. Of course, capturing a prisoner is the supreme way of satisfying the intelligence requirement. It’s like being a burglar: why stumble around in the dark trying to find the hidden safe when the owner is upstairs sitting on the john? Just go up there, stick a gun in his nose and get all the info you want. Only here he is hanging around with all his little nuoc mam messmate buddies and they hate people tip-toeing around their back yard.

Eldon had gone out with his Nungs. He was doing some good recon inside his ten by ten area, when they stumbled upon some NVA lieutenant. Now, the lieutenant did what any sane person would do. He took one look at “Mayhem Incorporated,” and ran. Hell, if I came upon Eldon and his Chinese cutthroats I would run for cover, too. They, on the other hand, saw a golden opportunity to grab some real intelligence, make a primo cash bonus, and get back to Da Nang all in one fell swoop. So they ordered him to halt. Panic set in. The NVA did the high sneaker and carry, and they were forced to shoot him in one leg. He went down.

Then he struggled to his feet and took off again. So they shot him in the other leg. They bagged and tagged him, the SOG shuttle came in and picked them up, and they got back to the launch site where they rushed him to the hospital. The doctors were upset because we wanted to interrogate this guy while they worked on him feverishly.

It is policy that if we get a prisoner back to camp, one of our people acts as guard. The team sends the perfect guy as guard, Bob Castillo. He comes back late that night with the news that the prisoner died. Most people don’t realize how septic gunshot wounds are. The dirt, and every other nasty bug around, gets pummeled into the tissue on impact. There is some cauterizing from the bullet, but in general it’s a messy affair. Infection, massive and systemic, sets in and eventually the guy has tubes running out of his chest and is in real bad shape. The prisoner looks at the docs as if to say, “Fuck you. I’m going to die.” and does just that. Now Eldon is upset
